What is a landing page, really? Why do I need a landing page? How can a landing page help convert more customers and make me more money? In this blog post we’ll answer all your landing page questions, and help you get started attracting more clients!
As digital marketing professionals, sometimes our language can be jargon-heavy. We sit and talk in this language all day, so when we get on the phone or meet up with clients, it can be difficult to realize that you have no idea what we’re talking about. And that’s okay! It’s not your job to know our industry jargon. We might not know the jargon of your industry either (unless you’re in the event rentals industry! We definitely speak that language).
However, it is our responsibility as professionals to relay messages clearly, so our customers understand exactly what they’re getting and why. This notion of clarity and transparency is often lost in any industry involving digital technology. Clients have so many new words thrown at them that they feel like their heads are spinning. We’ve talked to a ton of top notch business people who feel like they’re dumping money down a marketing black hole because they don’t have time to research all the obnoxious jargon that’s thrown at them.
The good news is: it doesn’t have to be that way. When it comes to marketing, you CAN understand where your money is going and why it’s going there. You just need clear communication with less industry jargon. At 2oddballs, that is exactly how we build trust.
Today, we’re going to start by clearing the dust about what a landing page actually is, and how it can help you on your way to success.
So, what is a landing page?
A landing page is a single webpage (as opposed to a multi-page web“site”) designed for a single, specific objective or goal.
That’s all!
Are you trying to get your visitor to click a button? Fill out a form? Make a phone call? Whatever your goal, the piece of content intended to induce that action is known as your Call To Action (CTA).
For example, your CTA might be “Fill out this form and we’ll rush you an information packet!” If that’s the case, everything on the landing page should funnel your visitor toward that form. Some other examples of goals could be to sign up for a newsletter, purchase a product, visit your brick-and-mortar store, etc. In digital marketing, reaching this goal is called a conversion. Below is an example of 2oddball’s landing page CTA.
One person fills out a form, that’s one conversion.
Why do you need a landing page?
Well, landing pages help A LOT with Google AdWords and other online advertising platforms. In this day and age, running ads on Google is one of the best ways to attract new customers. It’s incredibly important that the ad, the keywords used, and your landing page have an excellent relationship. This means that you want them to have similar designs and you want them all to point to the same goal (i.e. your conversion, e.g. filling out a form, purchasing a product, etc). This creates a powerful Quality Score, which helps you make it to the top search spots. See Below:
Why not just Use my regular site?
The website you already have has many functions. You have a home page, which gives the visitor an automatic feel for your company, an About Us page, which is great for giving your customer an idea of your values, your strengths, your history, and what they can expect to experience as your customer. Then you have various other information pages, perhaps product pages, maybe a photo or video gallery, etc.
The point is, your full website is absolutely needed, but the information is too broad, and it only takes seconds to lose a visitor who is looking for something specific. They want it to be EASY. You need a page with one clear goal that can be achieved in seconds.
Simplicity is what makes landing pages effective. There are different goals and different ways to reach those goals. But, in the end, most businesses can benefit by narrowing the path for those visitors who are looking for that special something only you can provide.
